An estimated 40% to 80% of job applicants now use AI to write resumes, craft cover letters, and prepare for interviews (SHRM, 2025). 83% of Australian employers have received AI-generated resumes containing inaccurate information in the past six months (Remote Global Workforce Report, 2025). 94% of U.S. hiring managers have encountered misleading AI-generated content from candidates (Resume Now, 2025).
The natural response is to try to detect it. Identify which resumes are AI-generated, flag them, and filter them out. It is an understandable instinct, and it is the wrong approach.
The detection arms race you cannot win
AI content detection tools exist. GPTZero, Originality.AI, Copyleaks, and others all claim to distinguish AI-generated text from human-written text. Some report accuracy rates above 95% under controlled conditions.
But controlled conditions are not what a recruiter's inbox looks like.
Detection tools work by measuring statistical patterns in text: how predictable word choices are, how uniform sentence structure is, how "smooth" the writing reads. AI-generated text tends to be more predictable and less variable than human writing. Detectors look for that pattern.
The problem is threefold.
First, accuracy drops significantly when text has been edited. A candidate who generates a resume with ChatGPT and then revises it (changing a few phrases, adding personal details, adjusting the tone) produces text that sits in the gray zone between "clearly AI" and "clearly human." Most real-world AI-enhanced resumes are exactly this: partly generated, partly edited, partly original. Detection tools were not built for this hybrid reality.
Second, false positives carry serious consequences. A recruiter who uses a detection tool and rejects a human-written resume because the tool flagged it as AI-generated has just eliminated a potentially excellent candidate based on a technological error. One study found false positive rates as high as 38% for certain detectors (ZeroGPT, per Originality.AI's meta-analysis of 13 studies). Even the best-performing tools acknowledge non-trivial error rates. In hiring, where a single false positive means a lost candidate, that margin is not acceptable.
Third, the arms race is structurally unwinnable. As AI models improve, their output becomes less distinguishable from human writing. As detection tools improve, "humanizer" tools emerge that rewrite AI text to evade detection. GPTZero itself offers a rewriting tool designed to make text sound more human. The tools designed to catch AI are, in some cases, also selling tools to beat AI detection. This is not a market that will converge on a solution. It is an escalating cycle.
There is also an ethical dimension that recruiters should consider. Using AI detection tools to filter resumes creates a de facto penalty for AI use, even when that use is appropriate and responsible. A candidate who uses AI to overcome a language barrier, a disability, or simple unfamiliarity with resume conventions is penalized alongside the candidate who uses AI to fabricate qualifications. Detection tools cannot distinguish between these motivations. They can only flag patterns. In a hiring context where fairness and anti-discrimination obligations apply, this indiscriminate filtering raises questions that most organizations have not yet answered.
Why detection asks the wrong question
Even if a perfect detection tool existed, one that could identify every AI-enhanced resume with zero false positives, it would still be asking the wrong question.
The question "was this resume AI-generated?" assumes that AI generation is the problem. It is not. The problem is whether the candidate can do the work.
Consider three candidates who submit resumes for the same role:
Candidate A writes their resume entirely by hand. It is poorly formatted, has a few grammatical errors, and undersells their experience. They are an excellent professional with strong AI judgment. They just do not write good resumes.
Candidate B uses ChatGPT to generate a polished resume. The formatting is clean, the language is precise, the keywords are perfectly matched to the job description. They are mediocre at their actual job and have never verified an AI-generated claim in their professional work.
Candidate C uses AI to draft their resume, then carefully edits it to accurately reflect their experience. They added specific results and removed AI-generated embellishments that were not true. The final product is polished and accurate.
A detection tool would flag Candidate B and possibly Candidate C, while passing Candidate A. But the actual risk hierarchy is the opposite. Candidate B, polished, AI-generated, and unverified, is the one most likely to produce unreliable work. Candidate A is undervalued. Candidate C used AI exactly the way competent professionals should use it: as a tool, with critical oversight.
Detection penalizes AI use. It does not measure AI judgment. Those are fundamentally different things.

The real problem with AI-enhanced resumes is not AI
The data from the Express/Harris Poll (February 2026) is revealing: 80% of hiring managers say resumes do not match real-world skills at least sometimes, and 86% say AI makes it too easy to exaggerate. But notice what the data actually describes. The problem is not that AI wrote the resume. The problem is that the resume, however it was produced, does not accurately reflect what the candidate can do.
This was true before AI. Resumes have always been a curated self-presentation. Candidates have always exaggerated, omitted, and reframed their experience. AI has not created a new problem. It has accelerated and amplified an existing one.
The resume-reality gap is wider now because AI makes polishing effortless. A candidate no longer needs writing skill to produce a well-written resume. They no longer need formatting knowledge to produce a clean layout. They no longer need industry vocabulary to sound like they belong. The barriers to producing a plausible resume have effectively been removed.
This means the resume contains less information than it used to. When producing a polished resume required effort, the polish itself was a signal. It suggested attention to detail, communication skill, professional awareness. Now that polish is free, it signals nothing. The information content of the resume has been diluted, not because of fraud, but because the cost of presentation has dropped to zero.
Trying to detect and remove AI-enhanced resumes is an attempt to restore the old signal value of resume polish. It will not work, because the change is structural. Polish is no longer a reliable signal, and no detection tool can make it one again.
What to do instead
If resume detection is the wrong approach, what is the right one?
Accept that resumes are marketing documents, not assessment tools. They always were. AI has simply made this more obvious. Use resumes to establish basic eligibility (does the candidate have relevant experience in the right domain?) and stop treating them as a measure of capability.
Shift evaluation to behavior-based methods. The question that matters is not "did you write this resume yourself?" but "can you evaluate AI-generated content critically, handle sensitive data appropriately, and exercise judgment under realistic conditions?" These questions can only be answered by putting candidates in scenarios where they have to demonstrate the behavior, not describe it. As we outlined in our analysis of the gap between claimed and actual AI skills, the disconnect is measurable, and it requires measurement methods designed for it.
Stop rewarding AI fluency and start assessing AI judgment. A candidate who can generate impressive output with AI is less valuable than a candidate who knows when AI output should not be trusted. The difference between these two candidates is invisible on a resume and invisible in a standard interview. It becomes visible only in scenario-based assessment, when the candidate encounters a plausible but flawed AI output and has to decide what to do with it.
Evaluate what candidates do with AI, not whether they used it. The relevant question for hiring in 2026 is not "did this candidate use AI?", as the answer is almost certainly yes, and that is fine. The relevant question is: did they use AI well? Did they verify the output? Did they know what to check? Did they recognize what AI cannot reliably do in their professional context? These are the dimensions that predict job performance, and they cannot be assessed by scanning a resume for statistical patterns.
The hiring process AI has made obsolete
The traditional hiring funnel (resume screen, phone screen, interview, offer) was designed for a world where the cost of producing a plausible application was high. In that world, the resume itself carried information. The effort required to produce a good one correlated, imperfectly but meaningfully, with the candidate's professional capabilities.
That correlation is gone. AI has decoupled presentation from capability. A candidate who cannot do the work can now present as if they can, effortlessly and at scale. 90% of hiring managers report more spam applications, largely attributed to AI tools (Resume Now, 2025). The volume problem and the quality problem are the same problem: when producing applications costs nothing, applications carry no information.
This is not an argument against AI. It is an argument against processes that were designed before AI existed. The phone screen, for example, increasingly encounters candidates who have rehearsed structured answers using AI coaching tools. The interview encounters candidates whose responses sound articulate and framework-driven because they prepared with AI, not because they think that way naturally. Even work sample assessments face candidates who produce outputs with AI assistance that they could not replicate independently under time pressure.
Each traditional stage rewards a slightly different form of AI-enhanced presentation. None of them systematically tests whether the candidate can exercise judgment about AI output itself: whether they verify claims, recognize limitations, handle sensitive information appropriately, or know when to override AI recommendations. These are the capabilities that will determine whether a hire succeeds or fails in a role that involves AI. And these are the capabilities that the current hiring process was never designed to measure.
The recruiters who will navigate this environment successfully are not the ones who find better detection tools. They are the ones who stop asking "was this resume real?" and start asking "can this candidate actually work with AI effectively?" That second question is harder to answer, but it is the only one that matters.
